For Americans ,giving tips is kind of a custom ,and usually pretty generous,if you were working in a hotel ,you'd have an impressive tips ,sometimes ,it could be much better than your monthly pay .
For Chinese ,we don't have the custom of giving tips ,besides there is no job can get tips in China ,I don't know why ,maybe just because of the difference of economic development and characters ,.Americans are more extroverted ,maybe they don't think money as a serious issue ,what they really care about is whether they could have a good service given by you .Our nation is introverted ,or maybe many people think accepting that money as an insult because i work for you and giving you the best service is what i should do?I think the very reason is that we don't have the custom ,so there are some foreigners read something about giving tips before they went to china ,they would not give you tips ,just follow the custom.

In America, most of the waitresses and waiters make their living on tips, which means they only make minimum hourly wage, so tip or not makes a big difference for them. When you eat in a restaurant, most people leave a 15% tip or even higher depends on the services. Even in the hotel, you need to tip the bell boy and the house keeper. Besides, people respect and appreciate their service in America;
In the other hand, for all these year, there is no such thing as tipping system in China, people take them as granted, no appriciation at all. They look down on service industry, always think they are low class, and Chinese are very cheap on tipping, maybe they don't know in the begaining, but some are just don't tip even they know they should.
Agree or not, that's how I look at it!
